Efforts of Nagaoka University of Technology Toward Achieving the SDGs

Sustainable Development GOALS

Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT) took the initiative to develop an engineering education program that incorporated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into consistent and practical engineering education after the adoption of the SDGs, and established the GIGAKU SDG Institute in 2017 to lead this effort.

In 2018, the GIGAKU SDG Institute became the first engineering university in Japan to be recognized as a UNESCO Chair Programme under the title “UNESCO Chair on Engineering Education for Sustainable Development.” In 2019, the foundation for the global expansion of this programme, called the GIGAKU SDG Network, was established. Ten institutions from six countries that share the same basic philosophy submitted a joint application to the UNITWIN programme. In 2022, the GIGAKU SDG Network was renewed as a programme aligned with the UNESCO Medium-Term Strategy for 2022 to 2029.

The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) designates universities that actively engage with each of the 17 SDGs as Hub Universities. NUT was appointed as the SDG9 Hub University for two consecutive terms, from 2018 to 2021 and from 2021 to 2024, and has promoted education and research with the aim of achieving all the SDGs, with a particular focus on Goal 9 (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation). In the third term from 2025 to 2027, NUT has once again been appointed as the SDG9 Hub University. Under the new structure, each goal is supported by one Chair University and three Vice-Chair Universities responsible for Teaching and Education, Research, and Outreach and Partnership. NUT will continue its activities as the Vice-Chair University in charge of Research for Goal 9.

We will continue to focus on Goal 9 through education and research activities that contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
